I Walk Where I like

‘I walk where I like’ visualises a process of marginal wondering and wandering. Recounting a specific period of transformative seeking, dream and awakening in the life of a senior academic, footage of rural southern Africa straddles roadsides, paths and demarcated tarmac.
This artwork was made following a 2019 discussion with an academic in a senior management level at a South African university. South Africa is a context undergoing rapid changes to its institutions of authority and the individuals who populate it, with higher education a focus of the ‘transformation of the country’ in line with its aspirant constitution. This male academic is one of the majority of current entrants to higher education in the country - a black African, who is of the first generation in his lineage/ ancestry to access higher education, from a rural childhood.
